Additional Plenary Indulgence Available in Honor of the 800th Anniversary of the Founding of the Order of Preachers

800th Jubliee of Order of Preachers Plenary Indulgence

In additional to the indulgence that the faithful can get once per day for going through a holy door of mercy, Pope Francis has also extended the opportunity go gain a plenary indulgence to those who make a pilgrimage to a church or place of worship of the Dominican order.  This opportunity was extended by the Pope in honor of the 800th anniversary of the Order of Preachers founded by St. Dominic.

To obtain the plenary indulgence one must spend some time in meditation before the Blessed Sacrament in a Dominican Order church and at the end of that time say the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the Dominican Jubilee prayer, the invocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Most Holy Rosary, and by fulfilling the usual conditions for an indulgence.  You can invoke her by saying “Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us” or by praying the rosary itself.

The plenary indulgence is available through January 21, 2017.

The Dominican Order of Preachers was established by St. Dominic in 1216.  It is now a religious order of Friars, Nuns, Sisters and laity, worldwide.  Dominican Saints include St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Martin de Porres, St. Vincent Ferrar, St. Catherine of Alexandria, Pope St. Pius V, St. Catherine of Siena, and many, many more.  You can learn more about the 800th Anniversary “Jubilee” here.

Dominican Jubilee Prayer

God, Father of mercy,
who called your servant Dominic de Guzman
to set out in faith
as an itinerant pilgrim and a preacher of grace,
as we prepare to celebrate the Jubilee of the Order
we ask you to pour again into us the Spirit of the Risen Christ,
that we might faithfully and joyfully proclaim
the Gospel of peace,
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

St. Dominic, pray for us!
