Honor the Feast of St Francis of Assisi by visiting an outdoor shrine

St Francis Preaching to the BirdsToday is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi who is known, among many other things, for preaching to the birds and other animals.  A perfect way to honor St. Francis is to spend some time in prayer outdoors with the animals.  You can visit one of the many pilgrimage sites listed below that have outdoor grottos, stations of the cross, rosary ways or other outdoor places for prayer and meditation.  If you can’t make it to one of these, visit the outdoor areas of your local church or sit outside and spend some time in prayer.  Watch the squirrels playing, notice the butterflies and dragonflies and birds and remember the holiness of St. Francis.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
