It is more economical for them if they can make several stops within an area or a state, so spread the word to the churches in your state. For more information about hosting the relic tour contact Katia Felty at 570-259-9903 or Rynoles@gmail.com.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Icon Jubilee Pilgrimage Tour

The 150th Anniversary of the Mission of the Redemptorists to “make Our Mother of Perpetual Help known throughout the world” was declared a Jubilee Year.  With the pronouncement of the Jubilee Year comes an opportunity for the faithful to obtain a plenary indulgence (under the usual conditions of confession, communion, and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father) by making a pilgrimage to the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome or any Redemptorist Church in the world to venerate the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help by the close of the Jubilee Year on June 27, 2016.  Pilgrims should spend time in prayer before the icon and recite the Our Father, the Creed, and prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary as conditions of the indulgence.

You can find a Redemptorist Church near you here.  They are listed by regions or provinces so for example the Baltimore Province includes Delaware, Washington D.C., Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, and the Virgin Islands.

Strength of Saints Relic Tour of St. Thomas More & St. John Fisher in Minnesota for Fortnight for Freedom

Strength of the Saints Relic Tour the Minnesota Catholic Conference Catholic Pilgrimage Sites

First let me say that I LOVE the tagline for this relic tour.  One of the wonderful things about the Saints is that we have the opportunity to draw strength from them in our everyday lives and there is really a Saint for any difficulty we face or obstacle we need to overcome.  Relic tours are a blessing because they give us an opportunity to draw closer to the Saints, to focus on their lives, their example, and ask for their intercession.

The Strength of the Saints Relic Tour is part of the Fortnight for Freedom and brings the relics St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher to several churches in Minnesota for public veneration.  As our country continues to face increasing threats to religious liberty, St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, both 16th century Englishmen, are excellent examples of the courage to live the Catholic faith in the face of persecution.  St. Thomas More was Lord Chancellor in England in the early 1500s.  He resigned his post and refused to approve King Henry VIII’s divorce and remarriage against Church teachings and his break from the Pope and establishment of his own church, the Church of England.  More was beheaded on Tower Hill in London for his faith.  St. John Fisher was a Bishop in England during the time of King Henry VIII and was initially asked to look at the validity of the King’s marriage to Queen Catherine.  He upheld the validity of the marriage and refused to give into the King’s demand or recognize the King’s new church.  He was executed two weeks before St. Thomas More.

You can see the updated tour schedule here.

Shrine of St. Katherine Drexel in Philadelphia Closing in 2017

National Shrine of St Katherine Drexel Catholic Pilgrimage Sites

Shrine of St. Katherine Drexel

It is with sadness that I share the news that the Shrine of St. Katherine Drexel, located on the grounds of the Motherhouse of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, will be closing in 2017.  According to the press release, the Sisters are selling the property, which was purchased by St. Katherine Drexel herself in 1891, as well as another large piece of property.  The Shrine is home to the St. Katherine Drexel Artifacts Gallery that includes her habit, her wheelchair, her crucifix, and her habit rosary among other things.  The body of St. Katherine lies under the main altar of the chapel for pilgrims to venerate.  The Shrine will remain open through 2017 and according to the release, “the remains of St. Katherine Drexel will be moved, when the time is right, to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, and placed near the altar already honoring her.”

If you have the opportunity to visit the Shrine in 2016, GO!  Once we move into 2017 it will be even more important for you to check the Shrine’s website and call ahead before finalizing your plans.  The National Shrine of St. Katherine Drexel is a treasure of the Catholic faith and I hope you will make time to visit before it is gone.  I’m sure this was a difficult decision for the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.  Please pray for them as they make this major change and move to a new home.

I will continue to provide you updates as I have them.

St. Katherine Drexel, pray for us!

Capuchin Franciscan Relic Tour of St. Padre Pio & St. Leopold Mandic

Relics of Padre Pio & St. Leopold Mandic in Rome for Public Veneration February 3-11 2016Image from Vatican Jubilee website

Father John De La Riva of the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, was commissioned by the Pope as a Missionary of Mercy and brought back first degree relics from Rome of St. Padre Pio and St. Leopold Mandic, patrons of the Year of Mercy.  The relics will be available for veneration for a month at a time at the following locations through the close of the Year of Mercy at the end of November 2016.

May – National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, San Francisco, CA
August – St. Lawrence of Brindsi Church, Los Angeles, CA
September – National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, San Francisco, CA
October – St. Francis High School, La Cañada, CA
November – National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, San Francisco, CA

Padre Pio was a Capuchin Monk born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy.  Like St. Leopold, Padre Pio suffered physical maladies and was sickly throughout his life.  In 1918 he had a vision of Jesus while offering the Mass and when it ended had the stigmata in his hands, feet, and side. Padre Pio became renowned during his lifetime for his abilities and people came from all over the world to have him hear their confessions.  At his urging, the House for the Relief of Suffering, a 350 bed hospital was built.  The relics of Padre Pio are on loan from the Shrine Monastery of St. Pio of Pietrelcina in San Giovanni Rotundo, Italy where they are available for veneration by the public.

St. Leopold Mandic was born in Croatia in 1866 but spent most of his life in Padua, Italy.  He was plagued with disabilities and malformities in speech and stature that lead to the development of his immense spiritual strength.  He became known as an Apostle of Unity and of Confession.  He was a Capuchin like Padre Pio and also shared his devotion to Mary, whom St. Leopold called his “Holy boss.”  He died in 1942 and is known, along with Padre Pio, as a saint of Mercy.  The relics of St. Leopold are on loan from Church of the Configuration Shrine of St. Leopold Mandic in Padua, Italy where they are available for veneration by the public.

If you visit the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, make sure you take the time to explore the Shrine.  Saint Francis Parish, which later became the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, was formally established in 1850 predating the the establishment of the city of San Francisco and the statehood of California.  The current building was rebuilt and rededicated in 1919 after extensive damage to the previous church as a result of an earthquake and fire in 1906.  There are extensive murals hand painted by Italian artists and stained glass windows throughout the Shrine.  One of the highlights of the Shrines is La Porziuncola Nuova, a scaled replica of St. Francis’s Porziuncola in Assisi, Italy, the Benedictine Chapel he restored when God told him, “rebuild my church.”  The National Shrine and Porziuncola was made a Holy Site by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.  Pilgrims can obtain a plenary indulgence under the normal conditions for visits to the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4 (the solemnity of St. Francis of Assisi, principal co-patron of the Archdiocese of San Francisco) and visits to the Shrine of the Porziuncola, Our Lady of the Angels on August 2nd each year (within the Porziuncola itself), and once a year on a day chosen by the Christian faithful and as often as they assist in a group pilgrimage visiting The National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi or the Shrine of Porziuncola.
