100th Anniversary Jubilee of Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, A Plenary Indulgence, & the Fatima Tour For Peace

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to 3 shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. In honor of this important centennial, Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year from the 27th of November 2016 till the 26th of November 2017. As part of the Jubilee Year, the Holy Father has granted the opportunity for the Catholic faithful to obtain a plenary indulgence under the normal conditions (detachment from sin, confession, communion, and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father) and meeting ONE of the following sets of conditions:

  1. Make a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Fatima in Portugal, “devotedly participate” in prayer or celebration in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pray the “Our Father” and the “Creed” and invoke Our Lady of Fatima;
  2. Make a visit to an image or statue of Our Lady of Fatima that is on display for public veneration in any Church, Oratory, or “adequate place” on the anniversary days of the apparitions (the 13th of each month from May – October 2017) and “devotedly participate” in prayer or celebration in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pray the “Our Father” and the “Creed” and invoke Our Lady of Fatima;
  3. If due to age, illness, or other serious reason are unable to meet either of the above sets of conditions should offer on the days of the apparitions (the 13th of each month from May – October 2017) join “spiritually the jubilee celebrations, offering with confidence to the merciful God through Mary their prayers and pains, or the sacrifices of their own life” in front of an image of Our Lady of Fatima while having repented of all of their sins with the firm intention of carrying our the normal conditions for an indulgence including confession and communion.

To celebrate the Centennial of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima the World Apostolate for Fatima USA has undertaken the Fatima Tour For Peace, a tour of 100 Dioceses with the world-famous International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima.  The tour is a “nation-wide call to prayer and penance for peace in our nation and conversion of hearts.”  The tour began in 2016 visiting Dioceses east of the Mississippi and will visit Dioceses west of the Mississippi through December 20, 2017.  The current schedule is below and we will make updates as we receive them.  Please call the church or visit their website before making the trip as the schedule is subject to change without notice.  A pilgrimage to venerate the statue of Our Lady of Fatima Tour for Peace would meet the second set of conditions above for receiving a plenary indulgence as part of the Jubilee Year.

    Thank you very much for your post! I want to share it with others. However, before I do can you please give me the link that you are referring to: “Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year from the 27th of November 2016 till the 26th of November 2017.”

    I have searched Google and I can find no Vatican link supporting this. I trust what you say is true, but I want to read it from your source. Help me get there.

    Perhaps adding this link to your webpage would be helpful to others. I know during he Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy many websites shared links to the official Vatican website. Pope Francis is often quoted, but in the age of the internet one has to be careful.

    God bless you for your work. Thank you for your guidance here.

    To Jesus through Mary, Dennis Macey

      Hi – I appreciate the question as it’s always good to make sure you have the correct information. The source was included at bottom of the post with the link. I’ve reposted it here for your convenience: “Information about the plenary indulgence was taken from the English translation, made by the WAF International Secretariat, of the text in Portuguese released by the Sanctuary of Fatima about the plenary indulgence for the Jubilee Year. https://wafusa.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Plenary-Indulgence-Centennial-Fatima-Apparitions-2017.pdf” You can also enter “Fatima Plenary Indulgence” into a search engine and you will find the information has been reported by reputable Catholic news sites such as Catholic News Agency. The Pope often declares a “Jubilee Year” for special occasions such as this, but doesn’t usually post anything to the Vatican website or create a special website as was done for the Holy Year of Mercy. That was an “Extraordinary” event (hence it being called the Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy) and there were a lot of “extra” things that were done that aren’t typically done for a “Jubilee Year”. For example, last year was declared a Jubilee Year (with an opportunity for a plenary indulgence) for the 150th Anniversary of the Mission of the Redemptorists AND also the 800th Anniversary of the Founding of the Order of Preachers by St. Dominic while it was ALSO a Holy Year of Mercy. The Holy Father is most generous. Best wishes!

    Please clarify something for me. Is it necessary for the Archbishop of a Diocese to designate an “adequate place” where the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima is displayed for veneration? In my country nothing is being done by the Church to promote the Plenary Indulgence and little is being said about the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima. We are members of the Blue Army and would like to avail ourselves of this Indulgence. GG

      Hi- The Archbishop of the Diocese doesn’t have to make any specific designations. It just needs to be an image or statue of Our Lady of Fatima that is on display for public veneration in any Church or Oratory. I hope that helps.
