For the first time in 395 years, the heart relic of St. John Berchmans will leave Belgium. It’s destination is Louisiana to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the miracle that occurred at the Shrine at Berchmans Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, the only approved apparition in the United States. In 1866, through the intercession of St. John Berchmans, a young novice of the Society of the Sarcred Heart, Mary Wilson was miraculously healed. St. John Berchmans appeared to Mary on her deathbed after her prayer for intercession and told her he came by the order of God. The infirmary where the miracle took place was converted to a shrine and is the only place in the United States where the exact spot of a miracle and apparition has been preserved as a shrine. The Shrine has long been on our list of Catholic Pilgrimage Sites and is part of Berchmans Academy of the Sacred Heart Catholic School, the only school in the United States to have had a miracle take place.
The heart relic of St. John Berchmans will be available for public veneration at the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans in Shreveport, LA from December 8-18, 2016. Please check the website or call before you go as relics coming from other countries have been delayed for unexpected reasons or held up in customs in the past. There will also be special events and speakers during that time. Please check the special website website created for the exposition of this relic for additional details. Pilgrims can also obtain a plenary indulgence for the veneration of this relic under the usual conditions.
St. John Berchmans is the patron Saint of Altar Servers.
