Founded by Padre Junipero Serra in 1771 the Mission of San Carlos Borromeo in Carmel, California, was elevated to the status of minor Basilica by Pope John XXIII in 1960. It is a registered National Historic Landmark and one of the few Basilicas in the Western United States. There are 5 museums located there, one of which is the cell where Padre Serra lived at the mission and where he passed away in 1784.
